Dodgers Drop Spring Finale
Pujols hit a solo home run estimated at 441 feet with his final swing of spring training, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3 Wednesday in their exhibition wrapup.
Signed as a free agent, Pujols hit seven homers this spring, along with 20 RBIs and a .383 average.
Mark Trumbo also hit a tape-measure solo homer and C.J. Wilson pitched four scoreless innings.
''To be able to play with Albert and see what he did in the first inning - hit that ball like a thousand miles an hour off the bat, that's really impressive,'' Wilson said. ''And to be one of the pitchers with Jered Weaver, Dan Haren and Ervin Santana, and just being able to draft off of those guys, it'll be a lot of fun this year.''
Ryan Langerhans and Jorge Cantu also homered at Dodger Stadium, helping the Angels take the rubber game of a three-game set that included a 12-3 rout on Monday night at Anaheim. The freeway foes will play six interleague games this season against the Dodgers, including a three-game set that starts June 11 at Chavez Ravine.
Trumbo, whose second-inning homer was measured at 444 feet, finished the spring batted .328 with six homers and 16 RBIs.
Trumbo hit 29 homers as a rookie last season. He was shifted from first base to third after Pujols left the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals to sign a 10-year, $240 million contract.
The three-time NL MVP is expected to rejuvenate a team club that last season played 50 games in which they did not score a run during the first five innings.
Wilson scattered five hits and two walks and struck out five to finish the spring with a 4-0 record and 1.11 ERA in six starts. The left-hander, who pitched in his first All-Star game last year, signed a five-year, $77.5 million contract with the Angels. He spent his first seven big league seasons with AL West rival Texas, pitching the Rangers to back-to-back pennants.
Wilson's official Angels debut is scheduled for next Monday at Minnesota.
''Overall, I think I pitched pretty well and made a lot of improvements over last year,'' Wilson said. ''It was a big learning experience for me, trying to get on the same page with all the catchers and kind of ingratiate myself with the new teammates and stuff.''
Nathan Eovaldi (1-2) was charged with seven runs - five earned - and eight hits over 4 1-3 innings in a lackluster ending to an otherwise solid spring. He finished the exhibition schedule with a 3.60 ERA in six appearances, including five starts.
Langerhans, a 32-year-old non-roster invitee to spring training, made it 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer. He came up with the bases loaded in the fifth and reached on an infield single, with a throwing error by second baseman Luis Nunez allowing another two runs to score.
Notes: The Angels have a 50-36 advantage over the Dodgers since interleague play began in 1997. None of the six regular-season games last season between the teams sold out. ... The Angels finished their exhibition schedule 19-12-2. The Dodgers were 15-15-4.
