Dodgers Lose on Yet Another Blown Save

Dodgers Lose on Yet Another Blown Save

Javy Guerra blows his third save in the 9th and Jamey Wright walks in the game-winner in the 11th to send the Dodgers home with their 10th loss.

Aaron Harang pitched well enough to win, but the pen imploded once again and the Dodgers' dropped their series against the Cubs while going just 2-4 on the road trip.

After a long rain delay, the game started at 2pm Pacific, though the down time didn't seem to have much of a negative effect on Harang. The big righty allowed just 2 runs in 6 innings, though he did allow 7 hits and walked 3. Josh Lindblom and Kenley Jansen each allowed a baserunner but no runs to preserve the lead.

The offense got started early, posting a run in the second on an Aaron Harang grounder. Adam Kennedy scored the run after Jerry Hairston pulled up on an infield single and had to leave the game with an apparent hamstring injury. It seems likely that Hairston will hit the DL and Justin Sellers will be recalled from Albuquerque, just a few days after being sent down.

Juan Rivera provided the Dodgers with their other 2 runs, following a Mark Ellis single and an Andre Ethier strikeout with a 2 run homer to left field. It was Rivera's second home run on the season.

The offense was shut down after that, not collecting another hit until the 8th inning and not having a runner in scoring position until the 9th.

Unfortunately, that's when it all fell apart for the pitching staff. Javy Guerra, who last pitched on May 1st to record his 8th save of the season, allowed a 1 out single to Ian Stewart and, after walking David DeJesus, allowed the tying run to score on Tony Campania's double. DeJesus, who attempted to score on the play, was thrown out at the plate by Mark Ellis.

Jamey Wright came in and worked a scoreless 10th, but fell apart in the 11th. A high-hopper to third bounced off of Adam Kennedy's glove and Darwin Barney reached second. Then, inexplicably, Mattingly had Wright intentionally walk Wellington Castillo, the Cubs' rookie catcher who was 0 for 11. Jeff Samardzija, who came up to sacrifice the runners, was hit on the elbow to load the bases. And to cap things off, on a full count, David DeJesus drew the walk to plate the winning run.

It seems like it's time for Guerra to relinquish the closer role. Kenley Jansen is the presumptive favorite to take over, with Guerra pitching the 7th or 8th. Lindblom has also been effective but figures to be more of a setup man.

The Dodgers head home for an NL West homestand. Tomorrow night, they host the Giants in a matchup between Ted Lilly and Barry Zito. Game time is 7:10pm Pacific.
