The AZL Dodgers score 8 but still suffer their first loss of the season.
Seven Run Fifth Too Much for Loons
That is what Tin Caps (5-2) centerfielder Kyle Gaedele did Thursday night in a seven run fifth inning that proved too much for the Loons (3-4).
"It's tough to stay in the game when you feel like you're out of it," said outfielder Scott Schebler. "But you can't throw away at-bats because you can't get them back."
Schebler didn't throw away his at-bats. He went 3-for-4 on the night accounting for three of the four Great Lakes hits. He also made a spectacular play in left field against the wall followed by a solid throw back in to keep the runner at first.
"The first guy (Frank Garces) is a tough lefty so I was just looking for a fastball," Schebler said. "Our outfielder coordinator is in town and I've been working on breaking back and we worked on it before the game and it came into play (with the catch)."
Starter Ralston Cash threw four and 1/3 innings giving up six earned runs on five hits, including a two run home run to outfielder Yeison Asencio.
"We had a couple miscues on defense early and he (Cash) struggled with control," said manager John Shoemaker.
Juan Rodriguez came in relief of Cash in the marathon long fifth inning and he was solid out of the pen. In his 3 and 2/3 innings of work he gave up one run on three hits while striking out three and walking none.
Rodriguez had struggled mightily since joining the team late in the first half, so Shoemaker was happy to see an outing like this and bring a positive to bad situation.
"We usually give out a game ball after we win and a couple times in a defeat I've given one out when I felt like we needed," Shoemaker said. "I saw a guy (Rodriguez) with confidence and a good live fastball in the strikezone."
