Albuquerque splits a doubleheader while the AZL club is rained out.
Loons Comeback to Win
But patients at the plate helped them comeback and take an 8-5 lead and the eventual 8-6 win.
"All the credit goes to those guys in the clubhouse," said interim manager and hitting coach Razor Shines. "They battle, they fight and they fell behind and that's just a credit to the kids we have."
Dodgers 13th round draft pick out of Central Florida, shortstop Darnell Sweeney, was able get the Great Lakes offense some early momentum with a leadoff triple and later scored to make it 5-1.
The Loons started the second inning with three-straight walks at the plate before Sweeney struck again with a RBI single to make it 5-2 and would eventually score another run on a wild pitch to make it a 5-4 deficit.
The Great Lakes offense would start the third inning with the bases loaded and no outs again setting up a two-run RBI single from designated hitter Jeff Hunt and a two-run double from second baseman Jesus Arredondo.
"It's a long game and our bullpen shut it down today," Sweeney said. "With them (the bullpen) throwing up zeros for the rest of the game that is going to help us."
The Loons needed a lot of work from the bullpen after starter Gustavo Gomez lasted just one 1/3 innings.
Juan Rodriguez came into the game in the second and pitched a solid third before losing control in the fourth leaving it up to Yimi Garcia to get out of the inning.
Garcia was able to work out of the inning and then threw two more innings without giving up a run and just two hits.
Michael Thomas came in and threw two innings as well giving up just one hit before Matt Shelton dominated the ninth and got the save with two strikeouts and a groundout.
"That's been par for the course," Shines said. "Matt Shelton and Mike Thomas…they've done this all year and we're fortunate to have them on our team."
Sunday was the second consecutive game Shines filled in for manager John Shoemaker who is serving a three-game suspension for an altercation with Fort Wayne a couple weeks ago, pitcher Jose Dominguez is also serving a three-game suspension for hitting a batter after being warned in that Fort Wayne game.
