Loons Blow Late Lead

The Great Lakes Loons bullpen blew a late 5-0 lead while dropping its series opener against the Dayton Dragons.

It was all Loons until the final innings in their opening game against the Dragons.

It was in those final innings where the Great Lakes bullpen blew a five run lead in route to a tough 6-5 loss.

"It's a very tough loss coming off of a road trip," said manager John Shoemaker. "We had a great outing by Greg Wilborn and hit some long balls, but we had other chances for situational runs and didn't get them in."

In the eighth inning the Loons had runners on second and third with no outs and failed to put any insurance runs on the board.

"That was a big momentum lift for them," Shoemaker said. "This was probably our toughest loss of the season."

What made this loss so tough was how well the starting pitcher Wilborn threw and how well the team hit on the night.

Wilborn went six 2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit and striking out five. The one hit he allowed on the night came against the second batter of the game.

"I just found the zone early and pitched to contact to get quick outs," Wilborn said. "It's disappointing because our hitters did so well."

While Wilborn was keeping the Dragons off the board, the Loons bats seemed to be piling on the runs.

In the team's 10 hits, seven were extra-base hits including four home runs.

Half of the home runs came from an unlikely source, shortstop Darnell Sweeney who hit two home runs with his first two at-bats while going 3-for-3 with a single and two RBIs.

"I just saw the ball real well today," Sweeney said. "They gave me pitches to hit and I put a good swing on it."

His second home run came on the tail end of back-to-back home runs starting with centerfielder James Baldwin.

First basemen O'Koyea Dickson also had a multi-hit game including home run No. 12 on the season.

"We swung it really well today even after a long bus trip," Sweeney said. "It was really good to see us in the box real comfortable."
