Cardinals Mozeliak, Matheny to stay longer

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced GM John Mozeliak will be staying through at least 2016 and manager Mike Matheny through 2014.

On February 5, when the St. Louis Cardinals announced an impending press conference, rampant speculation was the subject would be an announcement of a contract extension with pitcher Adam Wainwright.

That was not the case, however. In St. Louis, general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny instead shared the news that Chris Carpenter would very likely not pitch in 2013 and perhaps never again.

This week, the club was out in front of any speculation. Having disclosed on Wednesday that contract talks between the Cardinals and Wainwright had been tabled, the key hope for Thursday's press conference was nipped in the bud for some.

Mozeliak and Matheny were again behind the microphones. However, this time the duo were in Jupiter, Fla. The subject of the announcement was an extension of the GM's contract through 2016 and the 2014 option on the manager's contract being picked up.

Like Wainwright, Mozeliak, 44, was heading into the final year of his current contract – with much less future uncertainty, of course. Mozeliak was elevated to the GM chair in October 2007 after working in the Cardinals organization since 1995. In his five years as GM, Mozeliak's Cardinals have made three post-season appearances, including two straight NLCS berths and the 2011 World Series title.

Matheny, 42, became manager prior to last season, replacing future Hall of Famer Tony La Russa. Despite having no previous managerial experience, Matheny led the Cardinals to an 88-74 record and one post-season win short of a return to the World Series. The former catcher played 13 seasons in the majors, including five with St. Louis, and won four Gold Glove Awards.

No comparable announcement was made concerning Matheny's coaching staff.
