The Dodgers announced that they have acquired Ricky Nolasco from the Marlins.
Dodgers Midseason Prospect Update
1. Corey Seager, SS
Seager is the best position prospect the Dodgers have had in quite some time. DeJon Watson believes he's a long term shortstop and he's been killing the ball of late. Even if he moves to third, he's a potential all star.
2. Julio Urias, LHP
I flirted with the idea of making Urias the #1 prospect but with his age, he's just too young to project. Already armed with a plus fastball and a plus change, Julio needs to improve his breaking ball, his overall command and, most importantly, stay healthy.
3. Joc Pederson, OF
Joc has only improved his prospect value over the past year, posting nearly identical OBP and SLG numbers to his Cal League performance in 2012. Add improved defense and baserunning and you have a 21 year old who's doing it all in Double A.
4. Zach Lee, RHP
Another 21 year old in Double A, Lee has improved across the board in his rate stats since his first go-round in Chattanooga. His velocity has been back up in the low 90s consistently, but the lack of a true strikeout pitch limits his ultimate ceiling.
5. Ross Stripling, RHP
Stripling is beginning to look like one of the steals of the 2012 draft. He's shown excellent command of three pitches and the ability to keep the ball in the park. He's striking out about a batter an inning and, even without elite velocity, is missing enough bats.
6. Chris Anderson, RHP
After initially questioning the Dodgers' first round selection in the recent draft, I've come to realize what the Dodgers see in Anderson. The big righty showcases a plus fastball that can get up 98, a hard slider that gets swings and misses, and a changeup that has potential to be a third plus pitch. He needs to improve his command, but Anderson could develop into a #2 starter.
7. Chris Reed, LHP
Reed has bounced back nicely after a difficult 2012 campaign. He struggled in May but has posted an ERA of just 1.71 in his last 10 starts with nearly a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. The slider still works and his fastball is sneaky fast.
8.Onelki Garcia, LHP
After moving to the bullpen after an injury, Garcia has dominated in a relief role. I'm sure the club prefers that he start long term, with his fastball/curve combo designed to miss bats.
9.Duke von Schamann, RHP
Another surprise from the 2012 draft, DVS has ascended the prospect charts like his 5th round counterpart Stripling. The big righty doesn't have quite the upside, as a sinkerball pitcher, but could fit into nicely to the back-end of a rotation in the not-so-distant future.
10.Scott Schebler, OF
Sure, he strikes out a lot. Sure, it's the Cal League. But Schebler has fifty extra base hits in about half a major league season. He also has 9 steals. Let's see if he can keep this up at Double A.
11.Alex Castellanos, OF
Castellanos is a personal favorite who just hasn't gotten a shot in the majors yet. His numbers in Triple A are down a bit but his ability to hit hasn't been questioned.
12.Matt Magill, RHP
The luster has subsided, but Magill is still a prospect. Still just 23, he's had his ups and down in the majors but still has time to improve his command and control
13.Rob Rasmussen, LHP
I don't hold Rob's struggles in Albuquerque against him, as he showed swing-and-miss stuff with Chattanooga. The little lefty may end up the in pen when all is said and done.
14.O'Koyea Dickson, 1B
Dickson hasn't shown anything special this year, but he's a solid hitter who should continue to hit as he moves up the ladder.
15.Jonathan Garcia, OF
It's hard to believe that Garcia is only 21. He's recently joined Joc Pederson in the Lookouts' outfield, which will show if his power is for real.
16.Tom Windle, LHP
The Dodgers' second round pick in the 2013 draft, Windle shows two plus pitches at his best, which may lead to an eventual bullpen role.
17.Yimi Garcia, RHP
Garcia continues to miss a lot of bats with plus command of a low 90s fastball and a wipeout breaking ball.
18.Victor Gonzalez, LHP
I see him as something of a Julio Urias lite. Similar build, similar stuff, less velo. Dominating the AZL at 17 years old.
19.Darnell Sweeney, SS
He's shown some surprising pop with 38 extra base hits and plus speed 34 stolen bases, but he's also committed 29 errors in 92 games and struck out 96 times. A little polish would do him good.
20.Jesmuel Valentin, SS
Contact issues are a concern, but he shows advanced plate discipline and middle infield actions.
21.Scott Griggs, RHP
14.4 K/9 and just 5.9 H/9 show that he misses bats. 6.7 BB/9 shows that he also misses the strike zone.
22.Garrett Gould, RHP
After getting hit hard, the Dodgers surprisingly promoted Gould to Double A. So far, so good, though without plus velocity, will he miss enough bats? 23.Noel Cuevas, OF
Cuevas is a true centerfielder, he can run and he can hit. How much he'll hit outside of the Cal League is a point of contention, though. 24.Justin Chigbogu, 1B
Chiggy may be the Dodgers' best power prospect with Puig graduated. He may also set some strikeout records.
25.Andres Santiago, RHP
We all saw what Santiago was capable of in the WBC. Here's hoping he can fulfill his promise of a back-end starter.
26.Miguel Sulbaran, LHP
Another short lefty out of Mexico with a good change. The Dodgers do have a type.
27.Jharel Cotton, RHP
Cotton skipped High A and moved into Chattanooga's bullpen. It may be his ultimate destination, with a fastball up to 95 and a big curve.
28.Jeremy Rathjen, OF
Finally beginning to hit, Rathjen is a plus defender with a plus arm and plus speed. Will he hit? 29.Lucas Tirado, SS
The Dodgers' 2013 million dollar baby, Tirado doesn't have much in the way of tools but his left-handed swing sure is sweet.
30.Zach Bird, RHP
He's young, which is good. He's getting hit hard and not throwing strikes, which is bad. Still plenty of time for him to turn things around.
31.Daniel Padilla, OF
Signed this year for $200k, the 6'3 195 pounder has excellent speed, a plus arm and plus power potential.
And there you have it. Send all complaints/criticisms to Scout.com care of Kiley McDaniel.
