Chen Gets Huge Offer To Play in Taiwan

As expected, Chin-Feng Chen was the first choice in the player draft held by the professional league in his native Taiwan so now the former Dodger outfielder is presented with an interesting dilemma.

Chen, who was released by the Dodgers after seven seasons during which he became the first player from Taiwan ever to make the major leagues, was chosen by the La News Bears who promptly offered him $6 million for one year's service in the six-team Chinese Professional League based in Taiwan.

However, Chen's agent disclosed that he has received offers from three U.S. major league teams who are interested in signing Chen. The Bears have said they won't stand in his way if he does want to continue to play pro ball in this country.

Chen is regarded as a hero in Taiwan ever since he hit the game-winning home run to give that island nation the bronze medal in the 2001 World Cup.

The feeling is that he'll stimulate vast interest in the game there where it's been lagging lately, hence the huge outlay that the Bears are willing to make.

The 28-year-old Chen was unavailable for comment as to what his plans might be.
