In a game delayed nearly two hours by rain, the Giants manufactured a run over in the ninth inning to take the first game of the series 2-1. Hong-Chih Kuo allowed a single, wild pitched the runner to second, saw him advance to third on a ground ball and score on a long fly. The Dodgers continued their win one, lose one schedule, dropping a 2-1 game to the Giants in Dodger Stadiuim after waiting nearly 2 1/2 hours for the rain to allow action. The game finally got underway at 9:30.

Brad Penny drew the start and worked another strong game until he was hit on the arm by a comebacker in the fourth inning. He stayed to complete the sixth inning but the arm stiffened and he had to leader the game.

Penny retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced, including the first nine in a row. Randy Winn gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a leadoff homer, his first of the season and Jeff Kent slugged his first home run in the sixth to tie the game.

Ironically enough, Kent's 332nd career homer tied him with Bobby Bonds (Barry's late father) for 81st on the all-time list

Tim Hamulak followed Penny but left with one out aafter walking a pair and Takaski Saito ended the seventh without a problem.

Kuo (0-2) gave up one run and one hit in 1.1 innings, worked a scoreless eighth before allowing the winning run in the ninth and taking his second loss. Denys Baez got the last two outs to finish the ninth.

The Dodgers out-hit San Francisco 6-4 with Dioner Navarro collecting a pair of singles. Ricky Ledee smacked a double in the ninth but Los Angeles was unable to bring him home.
