Track runs `Willie Davis 3 Dog' sprint

Former Dodgers outfielders Willie Davis, Lou Johnson and Tommy Davis were in the Santa Anita winner's circle following the January 18th seventh race, which was named in honor of Willie Davis.

The 6 1/2-furlong allowance sprint down the hillside turf course, won by Forest Code, was dubbed the "Willie Davis 3 Dog."

Davis' nickname during his playing days in the 1960s and '70s was "3 Dog." He wore No. 3 and was one of the fastest players in Dodgers history.

Davis played for Los Angeles 1960-1973 and hit .279 with 154 home runs, 849 runs batted in and 335 stolen bases. He also holds the L.A. record for hitting in 31 consecutive games in 1969.

Davis said that he loves playing the horses and is a fixture at Santa Anita. He said Hall of Fame outfielder Duke Snider and former pitcher Stan Williams were often his companions at the track.

Tommy Davis, the 1962 and '63 National League batting champion, attested to Willie's love for the ponies.

"There were a number of times we had to drive on the side of the freeway to make sure we got to the ballpark on time," Tommy Davis joked.
