Former Dodger Art Fowler dead at 84

Art Fowler, 84 died at his home Spartanburg, S.C. on January 29. He pitched for Cincinnati, Los Angeles and the Angels and was a pitching coach for five major league clubs over 14 years.

Fowler, as pitching coach, won World Series rings with the New York Yankees in 1977 and 1978, under manager Billy Martin, his close friend. In addition to the Yankees, he was with Minnesota, Detroit, Texas and Oakland.

Fowler came to the Dodgers from the Cincinnati Reds to complete a deal. On June 15, 1958, Los Angeles sent Don Newcombe to the Reds for RHP Johnny Klippstein and 1B Steve Bilko. On June 23 the deal was completed when Fowler and LHP Charlie Rabe were sent to the Dodgers to complete the deal.

Los Angeles sold him to the Angeles on May 16, 1961.

He pitched for the Dodgers in 1959, working in 36 games, all in relief and recorded a pair of saves. He allowed 70 hits in 61 innings, walking 23 and striking out 47.

He didn't appear in the 1959 World Series against the Chicago White Sox.

Fowler pitched in the majors for nine seasons, over 362 games, mostly in relief, and had a career record of 54-51 with a 4.03 ERA.
