This Day in Dodger History -- Feb. 8, 1982

The Dodgers and New York Yankees played before an exhibition crowd of 93,103 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in honor of Roy Campanella, the largest ever attendance for a major league game.

Campanella, paralyzed in an automobile accident prior to the 1958 season, made a dramatic return to the Dodgers after spending nearly a year in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

During the fifth inning, the stadium lights at the ballpark were dimmed and fans in the stands struck matches in silent prayer as Pee Wee Reese pushed Campanella's wheelchair toward home plate. Reese was Campanella's longtime Dodger teammate who coached Los Angeles in 1959.

During his playing career, Campanella was a three-time National League Most Valuable Player who was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1969. After his accident, he spent the rest of his life helping others and serving as an inspiration to other victims of spinal cord injuries.

He served the Dodgers in the Community Relations department and as a spring training instructor until his death in 1993.

1940-- The Brooklyn Dodgers become the first National League team to fly when they travel by air to Chicago from St. Louis

1970-- Wes Parker hits a triple to beat the Mets in the tenth inning. The three-bagger completes the cycle for the Dodger first baseman.

1991 Darryl Strawberry returns to New York as a Dodger with mixed results. A crowd of 49,118 mostly booing fans watch him hit a two-run home run, and they cheer when he makes the last out of the game with the potential tying and winning runs on base in the 6-5 Met victory.
