This Day in Dodger History -- May 21, 1952

Brooklyn recorded the mother of all first innings, a record that might ever be broken. Brooklyn scored 15 runs to beat Cincinnati. Captain Pee Wee Reese walked twice and reached base three times in the inning. A dozen runs scored with two out. They collected 10 hits and seven walks plus two hit batsmen in the inning and the Dodgers finished with a 19-1 victory.

Twenty-one players went to bat in the inning against four Cincinnati pitchers and the Dodger starting pitcher, Chris Van Cuyk had four straight hits, two in the first inning along with two RBI.

Chronologically, here is the way the inning went: Billy Cox was thrown out 5-3 and the merry go round started. Pee Wee Reese walked and Duke Snider hit a home run (3 RBI). Jackie Robinson dropped a double into left center. Andy Pafko walked and George Shuba singled (RBI). Pafko was thrown out stealing third. Hodges then walked and Rube Walker singled (RBI). Van Cuyk (RBI), Cox (RBI) and Reese (RBI) singled and Snider walked. Robinson was hit by a pitch (RBI) and Pafko singled (2 RBI). Shuba and Hodges walked and Walker hit a bad-hop single (2 RBI). Van Cuyk singled (RBI) and Cox was hit by a pitch. Reese walked (RBI) and Snider ended things by striking out.

With all that action, the game lasted only two hours and twenty-six minutes.

The Los Angeles record for most runs in an inning is 10, accomplished twice. L.A. first scored 10 runs on June 28, 1969 vs. San Diego in the third inning. The Dodgers turned the trick again on July 4, 1971 against San Francisco in the eighth inning.

1890-- Before 915 fans, Brooklyn beat Cincinnati 19-4 behind Tom Lovitt and turned the first triple play in club history. With the bases loaded in the third inning, Hub Collins grabbed a ground ball and threw to Shortstop Germany Smith and the relay to Dave Foutz at first recorded the second out. Foutz fired the ball to Tom Daily at the plate to nail the runner attempting to score from second

1927-- For the second consecutive day, an umpire at Ebbets Field is the target of fan abuse. Arbitrator Frank Wilson needs a police escort after the Robins drop a twin bill to Cubs. Chicago scored nine runs in the top of the ninth in the second game to win 11-6.

1930-- A crowd estimated at 40,000 attempted to crowd into Ebbets Field for a game with the Giants but Freddie Fitzsimmons won 10-4 despite Babe Herman's second homer of the season.

1938-- Dodger President Larry MacPhail announces the Dodgers will put lights in Ebbets Field at a cost of $110,000 and will schedule seven night games.

1939-- Whitlow Wyatt injures his knee in a collision with Frey of Cincinnati and the Dodgers lost 7-2 with Freddie Fitzsimmons taking the loss.

1940-- The Dodgers work out a young infielder from NYU by the name f Al Campanis and he watches as the Dodgers dump Cincinnati 4-3 behind Wyatt and Dolph Camilli's two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

1943-- The White Sox defeat the Senators, 1-0, in 89 minutes making the contest the fastest nine-inning game in American League history. 1946-- Cookie Lavagetto's RBI single in the 10th beats the Cardinals 4-3 in 10 innings as Joe Hatten wins his fifth game against a single loss.

1948-- In a gesture of respect, the Dodgers celebrate Dixie Walker day in Ebbets Field. Although now a Pirate, Dixie bangs a two-run singe off Rex Barney and his Pittsburgh team beats Brooklyn 8-4.

1953-- Jackie Robinson gets and extra-base hit in his eighth straight game as the Dodgers lose 7-2 at New York.

1955-- Don Newcombe gives up his first walk in 31 innings but moves his record to 6-0  in a 6-4 win over the Phillies. Roy Campanella and Sandy Amoros help out with homers.

1957-- John Podres improves to 3-2 with a 6-1 win at Cincinnati. Reese and Amoros homer and Reese knocks in the winning run. Gil Hodges adds a single, double and triple.

1959-- Outfielder Don Demeter hits three home runs and knocks in six runs to help beat the Giants 9-7.

1961-- Catcher John Roseboro's home run beats Giants 3-2 as Sandy Koufax fires four-hitter.

1962-- Sandy Koufax and Stan Williams beats Giants 8-1 and 5-1 with Tommy Davis supplying the firepower in each game.

1963-- Johnny Podres fans 10, stops Giants 4-2.

1966-- Maury Wills RBI single in the 12th beats Pittsburgh as Ron Perranoski wins in relief of Don Drysdale.

1974-- Joe Ferguson's sacrifice fly in the lat of the ninth tops Cincinnati. The Dodgers were held to four hits and Mike Marshall got the win in relief of Doug Rau.

1980-- Joe Beckwith won in relief and Bobby Castillo got the save as the Dodgers win at St. Louis on the strength of Dusty Baker's home run.

198-- Tim Belcher out-dueled Dwight Gooden of the Mets, winning 4-0 and keeping the Dodgers 1/2 game back of league-leading Houston.

2000--Major League Baseball has its first six grand-slam day less than one year after establishing the mark with 5. Shawn Green (Dodgers), Garret Anderson (Angels), J.T. Snow (Giants), Brian Hunter (Phillies), Jason Giambi (A's) and Adrian Beltre (Mariners) all contributed to the record. The National League also set a record with four of the six base-loaded homers.
