Everyone had an idea of what David Wells could do on the mound. What they
didn't know, at least until he made his first start for the Dodgers on Sunday
night, was his talent as a hitter. OK, luck is probably the better word.
|
Wells led off the fifth inning by dropping a perfectly executed bunt up the
third base line. By the time Mets third baseman David Wright was able to pick up
the ball and throw to first, Wells had lumbered down the necessary 90 feet to
first base.
The bunt single was the first of Wells' career. It will probably be his last.
But this particular hit did more than add a footnote to his career. It ignited a
rally that pushed the Dodgers past the Mets and back into the wild-card race.
"That was impressive," said Dodgers leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal, an
experienced bunter. "When he did that, it was unbelievable. He made something
happen in the game, and it made me want to get on base, too."
He did. So did outfielder Matt Kemp and infielder Ramon Martinez. The two-run
rally turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead and an eventual victory.
Wells decided to try the bunt because he didn't feel he had any other choice.
He struck out swinging in his first at-bat against Mets pitcher John Maine and
figured he didn't have anything to lose.
"I wasn't able to touch him in my first at-bat," Wells said. "I thought I
would take a chance with the bunt and see what happens."
Wells was teased by his teammates about the offensive weaponry that he
displayed and was even compared to Rod Carew. Wells would prefer to just go back
to the mound every five days, toting his .125 batting average.
Notes & Quotes
--CF Juan Pierre had two hits in Sunday night's victory, increasing his
hitting streak to 14 games. It's the second time this season that Pierre has had
a 14-game streak
--2B Jeff Kent left Sunday's game in the fourth inning after an errant pitch
by Mets RHP John Maine hit Kent in the helmet. Kent admitted to being
light-headed after being struck, but by the time the game ended, he was already
thinking about playing Monday. "I've been hit before," he said. "It's no big
deal."
--RHP Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning Sunday but didn't really
have anything to show for it. The Dodgers won by four runs, so Saito didn't get
the save. Saito pitched because he had not pitched in two days and needed the
work.
--LHP David Wells became the fifth Los Angeles Dodger pitcher to start a game
after the age of 40 when he made his start Sunday night. Wells, 44, joins Don Sutton, Greg Maddux, Orel Hershiser and Tom Candiotti.
--1B James Loney has a slugging percentage of .280 at home, .688 in road
games. If the difference of .408 holds up for the season, it would be the
largest since 1957 among batters with a minimum of 225 at-bats.
By the Numbers: 20 -- The number of combined losses this season by LHP David
Wells, who the Dodgers acquired on Friday, and RHP Brett Tomko, who was
designated for assignment.
Quotes to Note: "It's time. Everybody knows it's been a rough year for me
here. It hasn't gone the way I wanted it to go and the way they wanted it to go.
You move on. You pack up and move on." -- RHP Brett Tomko, after being
designated for assignment by the Dodgers.
