New York manager Willie Randolph was remarking after the second game of the series that he would be pleased if one of his pitchers would work into the seventh or eighth. He got his wish when John Maine took a shutout into the ninth but after his 117th pitch, an RBI single by Matt Kemp, he gave way to Duaner Sanchez who closed the game out. | |||

Maine added to the Dodgers pain with a two-run single and was two outs from his third shutout and complete game in the majors when Kemp's RBI broke up the shutout and extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Penny (5-3) allowed 10 hits and 10 runs in 4 2-3 innings, the most off him in 236 career big league starts. It was the third time this year he allowed 10 hits in his eight starts this season. Penny fell behind 4-0 in the second and the Mets blew it open with a six-run fifth that equaled a season high for runs in an inning. Former New York Yankee Scott Proctor didn't fare much better, walking in a run and allowing a two-run double. Chan Ho Park, on the other hand, crafted three hitless and scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 2.45, but the game was completely out of hand by then. Chin Lung Hu, filling in for Furcal, doubled in the third for the first L.A. hit after the first eight Dodgers went out in order. James Loney doubled in the fifth leading off and Russell Martin walked but Blake DeWitt fanned and Hu bounced into a double play. Nine more Dodgers went down in order before Andruw Jones blooped a double to right in the ninth, Juan Pierre walked and with two out, Kemp slapped a sharp single to center for the only L.A. run. He hit extended his streak to 12 games. Shortstop Rafael Furcal was held out of the game again and with an open date coming up today he will get three full days to recover from his stuff back.
