Vegas Elevator Heading Down Las Vegas lost 7-2 to Fresno, dropping their seventh game in the last eight. The 51s were held to one hit through six innings and starter Justin Orenduff (2-4) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits -- four of them homers -- and two walks in four innings. The Grizzlies jumped into a 5-0 lead after three and Las Vegas didn't get on the board until the seventh and were trailing by seven at that time. A.J. Ellis' single in the second inning was the only hit on the Las Vegas side of the scorebook until the seventh inning when John Lindsey doubled to left and with one out and John-Ford Griffin singled to drive him in. With two out, a single by Angel Chavez scored Griffin and Jason Repko added yet a third hit in the inning before the final out. Brian Akin, Greg Miller and Mike Koplove worked four innings and between them allowed a single run on four hits. Las Vegas split their five hits among five different players. The 51s slipped to 42-39 and trail Sacramento by 5 1/2 games. Right-hander B.J. LaMura (2-2) stood out in the gloom, earning his second win with a strong six inning effort that saw him allowed five hits, a pair of runs and strike out five. Danny Muggee, Zack Hammes and Jacobo Meque added an inning each to preserve the win with Meque collecting his first save for the Suns. "I was trying to get ahead in the count and make them hit the ball at people," LaMura told the Jacksonville Times-Union. "Luckily, they hit a few hard, but they were at somebody. I was able to use my fastball to get some easy outs." His teammates scored four in the second inning to make life easier for him. Lucas May doubled and Shane Justis singled. With one out Adam Godwin's hit knocked in the first Suns' run. The Lookouts fumbled LaMura's sacrifice bunt to load the bases and an error on James Tomlin's grounder added another run. Ivan De Jesus capped the scoring with a two-run single. Adam Godwin singled and scored in the sixth and Mark Bellhorn's fifth home run gave Jacksonville their sixth run. Bellhorn extended his hitting streak to seven games, and the solo shot was his second homer in two days. Godwin led the offense with three hits; Bellhorn and Justis added two each while Tomlin and De Jesus each had a pair of runs batted in. The teams meet in the fourth game of their six-game series tonight, with Jesus Rodriguez, just up from Inland Empire, making his Suns debut against the Lookouts' Sam LeCure (6-4, 3.75). Carlos Santana doubled and scored on Andrew Locke's two-out single for a 1-0 66er lead but Lancaster scored twice off starter Alberto Bastardo. Jamie Pedroza tripled to lead off the third and scored on Ryan Rogowski's ground ball before Lancaster added two more off Bastardo and took a 4-2 lead into the seventh. Inland Empire added one on Rogowski's triple and then finally regained the lead in the ninth when Scott VanSlyke and Austin Gallagher doubled to tied the score and Rogowski's single put them up 5-4. Then Javy Guerra (1-2), after working a scoreless eighth, allowed the tying and winning runs to score in the bottom of the inning. Rogowski had a pair of hits and three runs batted in. Locke singled, doubled and drove on one, while Gallagher had an RBI double. Both runs he allowed came in the first inning on a two-run double. The Loons bounced back with a run in the third inning when Preston Mattingly walked with two outs and stole second base. He scored on a single by Andrew Lambo to pull the Loons to within one. Jaime Ortiz blasted his ninth home run of the year to tie the game in the fifth and later in the frame, an Alex Garabedian single scored Mattingly to give the Loons’ a 4-2 lead. Great Lakes tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on Alfredo Silverio’s single which scored Lambo. Garrett White pitched three scoreless innings and Matthew Sartor worked a perfect ninth to record his fourth save and close out the win. Lambo had three hits in the game and has hits in five of his last seven at-bats. Erik Kanaby had two hits, Ortiz reached base three times on a homer and two walks and Mattingly scored twice. The Loons (33-44 overall, 3-5 second half) return to Dow Diamond to start an eight-game homestand tonight, opening with four games against South Bend. Vetters Sent to Ogden Outfielder Travis Vetters has been sent to Ogden. Vetters was hitting .218 with no homers and six RBIs. Last season with Ogden, Vetters led the Pioneer League with a .645 slugging percentage and hit 14 home runs, third-best in the league. Att- 7,672.Short Season Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short The Raptors ninth-inning rally came up short and Orem won their seventh straight over Ogden in 11 days by a 6-5 margin. It all left manager Mike Brumley wondering what his Raptors had to do to get a decision over the Owlz. "We played well. We swung the bats good. We were competitive all the way through, our pitching battled through some adversity, we just came up short score wise," Brumley told the Ogden Times-Union. "But effort-wise, how we competed, it was all good. I think we're fine. We stay with that approach every night, our pitching continues to get better, we refine some things, and we're going to be fine. They got some breaks." Ogden took a 3-1 lead into the top of the eighth after Kyle Russell hit his third home run of the season to tie the game 1-1 in the first inning and he doubled and later scored on Steven Caseres sac fly in the sixth before Kyle Orr homered. Luis Garcia started for the Raptors and allowed just a pair of hits and a single run over four innings. Marcel Prado was perfect in the fifth and sixth inning, giving Ogden hopes of finally squeezing out a win over Orem. The Michael Redding pitched a scoreless seventh but was tagged for three in the eighth to put the Owlz up 4-3. Ogden tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Steve Caseres' second homer of the season. Javier Solano (0-1) was tapped for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to give Orem a 5-4 margin. Yet again Ogden fought back, scoring on Devaris Gordon's double and a ground ball by Clay Calfee. However, with runners at second and third, Caseres struck out to end the game. Brumley pointed out, "A team that is hitting .340, playing good defense and has good pitching, are tough to beat. But we can play with them." Catcher Jessie Mier singled three times, Russell, Gordon and Elian Herrera had a pair of hits each for Ogden. The Raptors play Orem for the eighth time in 11 days tonight before heading to Idaho Falls for a 3-game series. Dodgers Lose 14-11 Slugfest The Dominican Dodgers and Blue Jays1 combined for 26 runs on 23 hits and when you add in 12 errors, you come up with a wild, 14-11 win for the Jays. Eleven of the runs were unearned Enily Morales (.383), Alexis Aviles (.347) and Bladimir Franco (.315) padded their batting average during the long afternoon, each collecting three hits. Morales knocked in three runs and Yomiel Martinez banged a two-run homer, his first. Jose Dominguez was roughed up for four runs in the first inning. Leonel Beras surrendered an unearned run in the second as did Jonady Nunez over his three innings of work and the Dodgers trailed 6-3 into the seventh. They scored three times to tie the game 6-6, keyed by a squeeze bunt by Martinez and RBI singles from Alexis De La Cruz and Morales. The Dodgers had a stolen base and were caught stealing twice during the inning. The Jays added eight runs in the seventh and the eighth. Charlie Mirabel (0-1) was victimized by four unearned runs in the seventh and took the loss. Irvit Mendez gave up the other four in his first game of the season with out retiring a batter. He allowed one hit but walked four. Martinez home run opened the Dodgers' ninth and they went on to score five times, closing the gap a little.
