Jeff Kent, the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer, limped out of the game at Arizona with pain in his left knee. He was unable to take his turn at bat, and he and the club will know more today after an MRI.
The speculation it is some sort of injury to the cartilage, but Kent, like a number of other players before him this season, said he's been playing with it for the past six weeks.
What ever the injury is, it came to a head in the bottom of the sixth inning. He turned to his left on a sharp ground ball to first baseman James Loney, and the discomfort he's been dealing with turned into severe pain.
Kent rarely shares information about himself, so when he talked about it after the game, it was apparent he felt it was serious.
"It just got the better of me today," he said. "There's a lot of clicking and popping and it's pretty painful. I try the best I can to play through it and deal with it, but it became unable to play.
"I'm worried about it," said Kent. "We'll get a picture and try to figure out what it is."
Kent said he's been able to live with the pain after taking a few days off and will try that again, but his return, at least in this important series, is very doubtful. He was 0-for-2 with a walk Friday and is 5-for-32 (.156) on the trip.
His limp was pronounced when he left the clubhouses.
"He's got a lot of things going on," manager Joe Torre said. "He's got a chronic issue with the knee. Stuff's floating around and it locked up. My guess is he won't play Saturday [today]. He deals with a lot of stuff."
Blake DeWitt took his seventh-inning at-bat, and had an RBI single. In the ninth, DeWitt ended the game with a strikeout.
