Jonathan Broxton is expected to pitch in the World Baseball Classic, as he was named to the squad. Broxton is the only Dodgers player to join the Team USA. The WBC runs from March 5-23.
Broxton will be the Dodgers stopper in 2009. The club made an offer to Trevor Hoffman, former San Diego closer, but were out-bid by Milwaukee.
Terry Collins, the former Dodgers' minor league manager and who was farm director in 2007, was picked to manage Team China in the World Baseball Classic, according to MLB. He replaces former Dodgers infielder Jim Lefebvre, the current Padres hitting coach.
Collins managed the Angels from 1997 to 1999 and the Houston Astros between 1994 and 1996. Most recently, Collins managed the Orix Buffaloes in the Japan League, resigning in 2008.
"We are delighted that Terry Collins has accepted the challenge of managing the China team in the World Baseball Classic," said Ed Burns, the MLB vice president of baseball operations and administration, who oversees the Chinese ballclub.
"His experience as a successful Major League manager for the Astros and Angels, as a longtime Minor League manager and player development executive and, most recently, as manager for the Orix Buffaloes in the Japanese big leagues, make him well-suited for the role.
"He is extremely enthusiastic and a great teacher of the game. He can't wait to meet his team."
