Raptors, DSL Dodgers Win Tight Games

Jose Dominguez ... five shutout innings

Late-inning hits by Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Edward Bens allowed Ogden and the Dominican Dodgers wins. Galvez's single in the eight broke a 3-3 tie and allowed the Raptors a 4-3 win over Idaho Falls. Bens' walkoff double in the last of the 10th overcame the Orioles/Brewers 2-1.

Raptors' Top Chukars 4-3
Ogden and Idaho Falls wrestled each other throughout the game before the Raptors finally earned a 4-3 victory. It was the third straight 4-3 game of the series with Ogden winning two of them.

Raptors right-hander Edwin Contreras went six strong innings, striking out five. He sailed through 3.3 perfect innings before allowing single runs in the fifth and sixth. Luis Ferreras (2-0) allowed a single run in his one inning and earned the win. Steve Ames worked the final two innings for his fifth save. Ames went two innings for his fifth save, striking out all three Idaho Falls batters in the ninth. He had a shot at fanning four, since his first strikeout came on a wild pitch and allowed a baserunner. He punched out two more, then got a ground ball to second base, ending the game.

Ames, the Dodgers #18 selection in the 2009 draft out of Gonzaga, has a remarkable 29 strikeouts in 18.1 innings for a 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings average as well as an 0.98 ERA.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez's RBI single in the seventh inning was the difference for the Raptors. Brian Ruggiano walked and Lenell McGee was hit by a pitch before the eventual game-winning hit.

Ruggiano had tripled and scored on McGee's sac fly in the first and that run held up until the Chukars scored single runs in the fifth sixth and seventh.

Ogden scored twice in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead when Blake Smith doubled off the wall in left-center, scoring Gorman Erickson, who had walked, and Kyle Orr, who had singled.

For the second night in a two, Ogden manager Damon Berryhill wasn't around to see the big finish. Umpire Derrick Brooks again gave him the thumb and it was the third time ejection in the six-game homestand.

He came out of the third base coaches box to question the decision when Nick Akins was called out at first by Brooks in the eighth, pointing out that he felt first baseman Tito Espinosa had been pulled off the bag by the throw.

Brooks was again quick with the hook when Berryhill trotted over to protest. Berryhill has been fined by the Pioneer League for each ejection.

Ogden took two of three from Idaho Falls in the series to improve to 3-3 in the second half. The Raptors are off today as they head to Montana for a seven-game road trip starting Monday at Helena.

Cavazos-Galvez crashed into the Idaho Falls catcher and was called out in the fourth inning. Tempers flared and Ruggiano was hit twice by pitches and Lenell McGee and Smith were each plunked once. Idaho Falls' Hilton Richardson also was hit by a pitch in the seventh.

Ruggiano was 1-for-1 and scored twice. Cavazos-Galvez singled twice.

DSL Dodgers Win on Bens Walkoff Double
The walkoff craze generated by Andre Ethier, has spread to the Dominican League Dodgers with first baseman Edward Bens smacking a two-out double to drive in Enlly Morales in the last of the 10th inning to top the Orioles/Brewers combination team 2-1.

The Dodgers received glittering pitching performances from three members of the staff. Starter Jose Dominguez worked five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits. Arismendy Ozoria only gave up two hits but he also allowed the tying run in the sixth while pitching four innings. Carlos De Aza lowered his ERA to a microscopic 0.84 after a scoreless 10th and was rewarded with the win on Bens' big hit.

Morales sacrifice fly broke up a 0-0 duel in the fifth, scoring Alexis Aguilar who had singled with one out. Charlie Mirbal's single had moved him to third before the scoring fly ball.

Ozoria then surrendered a walk, threw a wild pitch and then gave up and RBI double that tied things up in the sixth.

The Dodgers banged out 10 hits but were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left an even dozen on base. Bens had three hits, Aguilar and Morales two each.
