Smith's Clouts Walkoff Homer in 10th

Corey Smith's solo home run in the last of the 10th gave Chattanooga a 6-5 win over Montgomery. It was his second hit and second RBI of the game.

The first-round selection of the Cleveland Indians in 2000, Smith played for Arkansas in the Texas League last season and was selected to the All-Star team. The 28-year-old signed with the Dodgers as a free agent and the game winning homer was his first as a member of the Lookouts.

John Koronka started for Chattanooga and allowed six hits and three runs--two earned--over six innings. Jesus Rodriguez, James Adkins, Harvey Garcia and Javy Guerra (1-0) followed on the mound with Guerra earning his first win of the season.

Dee Gordon also whacked his first home run of the season, a shot in the seventh inning that tied the game at five-all.

But it was outfielder Andrew Lambo that did much of the heavy lifting. The 21-year-old singled twice and doubled, knocking in three runs and boosting his average to .377, boosting himself into sixth place among Southern League batters.

Lambo has hit safely in his last 10 games and during that hot stretch hit .432 (19-for-44).

Eovaldi Aces First Start

Nate Eovaldi, the Dodgers 11th round pick in the 2008 draft, made the most of his first start of the season, allowing only one hit over five innings but leaving the game in a 2-2 tie. Visalia went on to beat Inland Empire 5-2.

The 20-yea-old didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. He issued a walk, allowed the hit and then wild pitched in the first run. A ground ball tied the contest and Eovaldi was removed and Bobby Blevins took over.

Blevins (0-3) was tapped for three in the seventh and took the loss.

The 66ers scored first in the fourth inning when Kyle Russell and Pedro Baez doubled back to back. They added the second, and final, run in the fifth on an Cesar Suarez's double and Preston Mattingly's sacrifice fly.

Inland Empire left runners at second and third in the sixth, a runner at second in the seventh and ninth.

Kyle Russell singled and doubled twice but was left on base each time. Suarez added two doubles.

Loons Shut Down Lake County, 5-0

Alex Wassel
Great Lakes Loons

The Great Lakes Loons pitching staff, led by starter Elisaul Pimentel, held the Lake County Captains to two hits in a 5-0 win, marking the team's first shutout of the 2010 season.

Pimentel tossed five scoreless innings en route to his first winning decision of the year, fanning six, walking two and allowing one hit.

Southpaw Andy Suiter stepped in for three scoreless innings of relief to total six strikeouts and one walk. Pitching in the game's final inning was J.B. Paxson, who retired the side to preserve the shutout.

The Loons improve their 2010 record to 10-5 with the win, and now sit two games behind the first place Captains in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.

Offensively, the Loons surged out to an early lead in the third inning, scoring five runs on three hits. Two walks and a throwing error, allowed the Loons to score one run before even having a hit in the inning. A Christian Lara double and Brian Cavazos-Galvez's groundout each scored a run.

Then Jerry Sands cranked his fifth home run of the season, taking his first pitch deep to left field for two runs. Sands has hit in nine of the last 10 Loons' games and has a .407 average, fourth in the Midwest League. He leads the league in OPS (on-base plus slugging) with a 1.338 average, and he is second in the league 1ith 17 RBI and five home runs.

Loons shortstop Lara was the only player to register two hits.

The Loons conclude the away-stand with a 4-2 record, outscoring opponents 29-20, and return to Dow Diamond Friday for a three-game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Right-handed pitcher Josh Wall (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season for the Loons; Nick Greenwood (1-0, 2.65 ERA) will throw for Fort Wayne.
