Bastardo, Savage Pitchers of the Week

Will Savage

Chattanooga's Alberto Bastardo and Great Lakes' Will Savage were names Southern League and Midwest League's Pitcher's of the Week (May/17-May/23).

Savage pitched one game last week, a seven-inning complete game shutout on the road against the Lansing Lugnuts, to become the team's first pitcher of the 2010 season to be named the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week (May/17-May/23).

Savage (3-1, 2.17) entered Saturday's game against Lansing with a 2.53 ERA and twirled seven scoreless innings to improve his average by .36 points. The California-native fanned six Lugnuts and issued no walks en route to his third winning decision of the season, limiting the 25 Lansing batters he faced to just four hits in the 106-minute contest.

The former Oklahoma Sooner spent three seasons as a reliever in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system from 2006-08, before reemerging as a starting pitcher in the independent leagues in 2009. He pitched for the second no-hitter in the American Association's history with the Wichita Wingnuts, one of his two complete games that season. Savage was acquired as a free agent by the Dodgers on February 4, 2010.

Alberto Bastardo
Chattanooga's Bastardo, (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 14 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 14 SO) ?pitched 6.1 hitless innings against Mobile. The BayBears' Ed Easley ended Bastardo's no-no bid with a double to left field, and Bastardo put the next batter aboard on balls. Bastardo showed guts in finishing the inning by inducing a double-play ball off the bat Taylor Harbin.

The southpaw's final line showed one hit, two walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings. In his next start, he was slightly more generous, allowing four hits over seven innings against the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday.

He gave up one unearned run in that outing, which came on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly after a throwing error sent an opposing runner to third base. Bastardo struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Bastardo signed as a minor league free agent in 2006.
