Rafael Furcal has taken a leave of absence from the Dodgers in order to be with an ailing family member in the Dominican Republic. Because of league rules regarding the bereavement list, Furcal will not be eligible to return before the start of the weekend series against the Boston Red Sox.
Furcal had been a catalyst for the offensive pouring in 18 hits, 3 doubles, two triples, and two home runs during the past 11 games. The veteran shortstop had seemed to have recovered completely from his early season injury troubles.
Replacing Furcal on the roster is Chin-lung Hu. For today's game against the Reds, Jamey Carroll will take over at Furcal's position.
